In December 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an expanded approval of Addyi (flibanserin), a once‑daily, nonhormonal prescription medication that targets low sexual desire in women. Originally approved in 2015 for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), the new approval now allows Addyi to be prescribed to postmenopausal women under age 65 who experience distressing low libido. HSDD is defined as persistently low sexual desire that causes personal distress and cannot be fully explained by other medical, psychological, or relational factors. Sexual desire naturally fluctuates over a woman’s lifespan, but HSDD represents a level of decreased desire that impacts quality of life.
At PRM, we understand that sexual health is an important part of overall wellness. Our team approaches sexual health concerns through a whole-person lens, considering the physical, hormonal, neurological, and emotional factors that can influence libido.
Addyi acts on brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine that play roles in regulating sexual desire. Unlike medications for male sexual dysfunction, which often target blood flow, Addyi addresses central nervous system pathways involved in desire and satisfaction.
While Addyi may offer a new option for some women, our clinicians at PRM emphasize that sexual desire is multifactorial. Addressing pelvic pain, hormonal changes, stress, or relationship dynamics can be equally important for improving sexual health.
The PRM Protocol™ is a proprietary, office-based approach that targets inflamed pelvic nerves and spastic pelvic muscles, which can contribute to pelvic discomfort and low libido. By addressing the root causes of pelvic pain, the protocol can:
Reset the pelvic environment for greater comfort during sexual activity
Retrain pelvic nerves and muscles to reduce pain and improve function
Support overall nervous system regulation, which influences sexual desire
Combined with counseling, education, and individualized care, the PRM Protocol™ helps patients rebuild trust in their bodies and feel more confident in their sexual health.
While Addyi may offer a medication option for some women, PRM emphasizes a holistic, evidence-based approach. Our clinicians consider the full spectrum of factors, pelvic health, hormones, mental health, and lifestyle, to create personalized care plans that help women regain control of their sexual wellbeing.
If you’ve been struggling with low sexual desire, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intimacy, PRM provides solutions that go beyond symptom management to treat the underlying causes.
