With expert input from Laura Kemp, Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Specialist at PRM in Chicago

Laura Kemp, CNM-FPA, WHNP-BC has extensive experience working with patients of all gender identities and is also a trained sexuality educator and counselor. She brings a holistic approach to care, recognizing the complex physical, sexual and emotional dimensions of pelvic pain. Her practice is dedicated to helping patients achieve relief, build confidence and reclaim their quality of life.

At PRM, we understand that seeking care for pelvic pain can be particularly challenging for patients with a history of sexual trauma. Our trauma-informed approach ensures that every patient feels safe, respected, and in control of their care at every step of their journey with us.

A Trauma-Informed Mindset from the Start

We recognize that not everyone feels comfortable sharing their history of sexual trauma, and we never assume or pressure patients to disclose personal experiences. Instead, our providers approach every patient interaction with sensitivity, ensuring a respectful and non-intrusive environment. If a patient chooses to share their story, we consider it a privilege and honor their boundaries by listening without judgment and without asking unnecessary questions. Our ultimate goal is to create a space where patients feel validated, heard, and empowered in their care.

Patient-Centered Physical Evaluations and Treatments

For patients with a history of trauma, medical evaluations and treatments can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we take extra steps to ensure that every patient feels secure and in control:

  1. Starting with Comfort: Every interaction begins with the patient fully clothed, fostering a sense of security.
  2. Clear Communication: Before any physical exam or treatment, we thoroughly explain the process, why it’s recommended, and what patients can expect.
  3. Informed Consent: Patients are always in charge. We discuss what they’re comfortable with and ensure that consent is obtained before any physical contact occurs.
  4. Respecting Boundaries: If a patient is not ready for an exam, we respect that decision. Much can be learned from discussing symptoms, medical history, and comorbidities, meaning that in many cases, a physical exam can be deferred or even skipped without compromising care quality.
  5. Ongoing Check-Ins: During any evaluation, we stay attuned to both verbal and non-verbal cues, reminding patients that they can pause or stop at any time.

Personalized Treatment Plans with Shared Decision-Making

Trauma-informed care is a guiding principle at PRM, influencing every aspect of our treatment approach. We believe in shared decision-making, where patients and providers work together to create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s unique needs. While we offer expert guidance and evidence-based options, we respect that patients are the ultimate experts in their bodies. Our discussions always include treatment benefits, risks, and goals to ensure that patients feel fully informed and confident in their care choices.

Building Trust and a Supportive Environment

Trust is the foundation of effective care, and we build it through consistency, compassion, and patient empowerment. We validate patients’ experiences, honor their boundaries, and foster a partnership based on mutual respect and well-being. Our goal is to make every visit a safe and supportive experience where patients feel heard and valued.

Holistic Support Through Worthy Warrior and Community Referrals

Healing from pelvic pain and trauma requires comprehensive care, and PRM is committed to supporting patients beyond medical treatment. Through our Worthy Warrior platform, we connect patients with holistic resources, including community support for those navigating pelvic pain and past trauma. Additionally, we collaborate with therapists and mental health professionals to provide referrals, ensuring that our patients have access to the full spectrum of care they need.
